A while ago (Aug. 9 2002) Salvador Peralta reported frequent lock-ups of XFree86 under RedHat 7.3 with an ATI Rage 128 card. This is just to confirm that he is not the only one with that problem. Ever since I upgraded to RedHat 7.2 did I encounter those lockups. Most frequently they happen when dragging a scrollbar with the mouse, but they can also happen in any other situation. I have "up2dated" my installation (now at kernel 2.4.18-24.7), but the problem persists. If I had to use Linux every day, my system would be considered unusable. Salvador reported to me that he could solve the problem by turning off graphics acceleration in XF86Config. My card is an ATI Expert 2000 PRO 32MB AGP. My MB is an ASUS CUV4X (VIA 694X AGP chipset).
