Now I'm confused. XFree86-truetype-fonts owns the following files:
$ rpm -ql XFree86-truetype-fonts
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximri.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirri.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisri.ttf

I have no /usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType directory.
$ ls /usr/share/fonts/default/
fonts.cache-1  ghostscript  Type1

The luxi* fonts show up in fc-list

$ fc-list | grep -i lux
Luxi Serif:style=Regular
Luxi Serif:style=Bold
Luxi Mono:style=Bold
Luxi Sans:style=Bold
Luxi Sans:style=Regular
Luxi Mono:style=Regular
Luxi Serif:style=Oblique
Luxi Serif:style=Bold Oblique
Luxi Mono:style=Oblique
Luxi Sans:style=Oblique
Luxi Sans:style=Bold Oblique
Luxi Mono:style=Bold Oblique

And exist nowhere else on my system:
$ locate -i luxi
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luximri.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxirri.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisb.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisbi.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisr.ttf
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/luxisri.ttf

My font directory list in /etc/fonts/font.conf has:
<!-- Font directory list configured on Mon Sep 9 15:24:30 EDT 2002 -->

        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
        <dir>~/.fonts</dir>

<!--

Hrmm, just found where the luxi font probably comes from:
$ grep -i luxi /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/fonts.dir
l047013t.pfa -b&h-Luxi Mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1
l047013t.pfa -b&h-Luxi Mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-2
l047013t.pfa -b&h-Luxi Mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-9
l047013t.pfa -b&h-Luxi Mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-15
l047013t.pfa -b&h-Luxi Mono-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-m-0-adobe-standard
[snip more luxi listings]
