If the software cursor option did not work, then you put it into the wrong config file. Make sure you are editing /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, which is the configuration file for XFree86 4.x, and not /etc/X11/XF86Config, which is the config file for XFree86 3.3.6 in Red Hat Linux 7.x.
