XFree86 Rage 128 32

Hi,

I am accessing this list from xfree86-list@redhat.com

The version of Xfree86 which ships with redhat v. 7.3 and on Mandrake
8.2 is highly unstable with my All-in-Wonder Rage128 Pro 32mb. Since I
have switched from Mandrake 8.0 with xfree86 4.0 to Redhat 7.3 w/xfree86
4.2, I experience unrecoverable hangs in X windows. The problem is
repeated in mandrake 8.2 and continues even when updating to newest
Mandrake xfree86 4.2 rpms.

I have switched back to redhat7.3 for debugging purposes.

The symptom is basically that I lose all mouse and keyboard events in
gnome and kde 2.2 ( e.g,., clicks and keystrokes ) but the environment
still recognizes movement of the mouse cursor. In KDE 3 on Mandrake
with the newest qt and kde libraries, 20% of the time, if I catch the
problem early enough, I can still use apps running in the main window
for a little while before it completely hangs, and if I do a
ctrl-alt-backspace before the windowing system completely hangs.
Otherwise recovery necessitates a hard reboot which invariably damages
my file system.

I am reasonably certain that this is an XFree86 issue since I have on
various occasions deleted any and all gtk and gnome project libraries
and run only in kde 2. Deleted any and all kde 2 and qt libraries and
run only in kde 3. Deleted any and all kde 3 and qt libraries and run
only in gtk and gnome. In all 3 environments, I experience
unrecoverable system hangs.

Looking on the supported hardware list, I see that my card is supported,
and indeed, I have never had a problem with my card from xfree86 3.3.x
through xfree86 4.0. The card itself is not broken since the system is
dual boot and my wife is experiencing no card-related problems in windows.

I have located the 4.2.0-57.i386 libraries provided by Mike Harris and
will install them today to see if they resolve the problems on my system
but I am skeptical since looking at the xfree86 newbie, xpert and
redhat xfree86 list I see no mention of incompatibilities with the
ATI All in Wonder Rage 128 card on RH 7.3.

I apologize for the long-winded post and for not providing more hard
data. I am sending this from work where Xfree86 4.2 on RH 7.3 is stable
and happy on a newer ATI card. I will send the /proc/iomem,
/proc/ioports, and lspci -v data along with anything else that you might
find useful for debugging when I get home tonight. If I can get anything
from the XFree86.0.log and an strace of startx and some apps, I will do
so. It would be helpful if someone could recommend any additional
debugging information that I might provide.

Also, should I provide debugging info on the existing system before
attempting to upgrade to Mike's newest rpm's?

TIA,

Salvador Peralta
