Did you compile your own kernel? There was no kernel-2.4.18-4 released for
i586 other than the kernel-smp-2.4.18-3.i586.rpm package.

uname -a won't tell you what arch your kernel was built for.
uname -a
Linux paradox.local 2.4.18-4 #1 Thu May 2 18:06:25 EDT 2002 i686 unknown

Try this:
$ rpm -q kernel --qf "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE} was built for the
%{ARCH}.\n"
kernel-2.4.18-4 was built for the athlon.

$ rpm -ql kernel | grep drm
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/i810.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/i830.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/mga.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/r128.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/radeon.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/sis.o
/lib/modules/2.4.18-4/kernel/drivers/char/drm/tdfx.o
