No difference. The problem seems to be with the new mkinitrd and
friends. When I installed 2.4.18-19.8.0 errata rpm the initrd that was
created as the package installed worked fine. (and still does) It's only
since upgrading other packages to satisfy 2.4.20 rawhide dependencies
that mkinitrd has failed to create a working initrd for either the stock
2.4.18 athlon kernel, or the stock 2.4.20 athlon kernel from rawhide

The set of tools below doesn't create a working initrd for either 2.4.18
or 2.4.20 unless aic7xxx and ext3 are compiled in to the kernel.
Downgrading mkinitrd by itself with "rpm -Uvh --oldpackage --nodeps
mkinitrd-3.4.28-1.i386.rpm" does NOT resolve the problem.

mkinitrd-3.4.33-1 Sun Jan 5 07:50:42 2003
kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-11 Thu Jan 2 14:36:21 2003
kudzu-0.99.83-1 Thu Jan 2 14:36:19 2003
hwdata-0.64-1 Thu Jan 2 14:36:18 2003
modutils-devel-2.4.22-1 Mon Dec 30 13:49:28 2002
modutils-2.4.22-1

The older RH8.0 stock versions of the above packages DID create a
working initrd every time.
