dumb question

In the CentOS base repositories, under the x86_64, I see a *lot* of 386 rpms that are the same package and release as the x86_64s. Note that I'm talking about dups; for example,
zlib-1.2.3-3.i386.rpm
zlib-1.2.3-3.x86_64.rpm

Why are they there?
