So does that mean the smp kernel defaultly supports more than 4GB of memory? That is there is nothing that needs to be done to use all of say 8GB or 12GB of physical memory? --- Jack Allen -----Original Message----- From: redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx [mailto:redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Pankaj Govil Sent: Friday, October 12, 2007 2:25 PM To: General Red Hat Linux discussion list; davidr@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Multi-core CPUs - kernel vs kernel-smp Also if you have a server with more than 4Gigs of RAM you will need to use the smp kernel Thx, Pankaj Govil -----Original Message----- From: redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx [mailto:redhat-list-bounces@xxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andrew Bacchi Sent: Friday, October 12, 2007 8:22 AM To: davidr@xxxxxxxxxxxx; General Red Hat Linux discussion list Subject: Re: Multi-core CPUs - kernel vs kernel-smp My answer yesterday was to use the kernel-smp on multiple CPUs and multicore single CPUs. If you're using either of these you'll need the kernel-smp. In the case of a single, non multicore CPU, use the "kernel" kernel. What hardware are you considering for your web servers? I have many Dell and IBM servers, all with multi Xeon processors. I'd think for a web server that has a fair amount of traffic, you'd want at lease two Dual-Core processors of > 2 Gh, and lots of RAM.
