since you asked... The RHEL is running on a vmware session, running on
a ESX server. This particular folder is mounted as a vmware virtual
disk, which also resides on the same physical server.
The reason I asked was that I not infrequently see odd permissions, and of
course numeric owners instead of names, if there's no ldap, and the user
doesn't exist on the box that has remote mounted a directory/filesystem.
