Thanks for the idea -- turns out I found the problem was with NFS. RHEL3 defaulted to using NFSv3. RHEL4 defaulted to use NFSv4. My Solaris servers (where the NFS exports often live) were having problems with NFSv4. After forcing RHEL4 to use NFSv3 (in auto.misc), everything works fine.
