I take it you did not read the description for keychain?  What keychain
allows you to do is to use keys *with a passphrase* so that even if your
keys are misappropriated, you're still safe.

This isn't to say that you absolutely need keychain - it just offers an
additional level of security that you don't get by using keys without
passphrases.  In many cases, using a null key is adequate.
