I found and downloaded the rpm that I needed.  That
solved the problem of PHP not being able to load the
dynamic library for SQL support. If anyone else is
interested I found the rpm at:

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/1655561/com/MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.23-0.i386.rpm.html

Package name: MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.23-0.i386.rpm
