i have a generic question regarding the installation/bootup process for linux. is there a way to have a motherboard install/bootup linux from a network connection?
Yup - it's known as a PXE boot. The DHCP server transfers control to another server (or it can be the DHCP server itself) which does a kickstart-based install.
