Hello,

My Redhat Enterprise 3 just started to freeze and I'm trying to find out
what is the cause. I've looked at my server logs and it appears there seems
to be a few problems which I don't know how to correct. Here are the few
items I've noticed:

1. The kernel complains about an unknown partition table in my 1 and only
IDE
HD:
     Aug 21 11:15:49 server22 kernel: Partition check:
     Aug 21 11:15:49 server22 kernel: hde: unknown partition table
Not sure how to fix this but I know I had a lot of diffucilties trying to
install this drive about a month ago. The problem was me...I'm a newbie in
the linux world and couldn't figure out how to add a new HD to the system.
;-)

2. Server complains about modprobe, not sure if this is a serious problem:
     Aug 21 11:17:55 server22 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-10-134

3. MTRR error about write-combining not supported:

     Aug 21 11:17:56 server22 kernel: mtrr: Serverworks LE detected.
Write-combining disabled.
     Aug 21 11:17:56 server22 kernel: mtrr: your processor doesn't support
write-combining

4. My Plextor CD/DVD R/RW errors:

Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel: hda: packet command error: status=0x51 {
DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel: hda: packet command error: error=0x44
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel: ATAPI device hda:
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel:   Error: Hardware error -- (Sense key=0x04)
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel: Tracking servo failure -- (asc=0x09,
ascq=0x01)
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel: The failed "Test Unit Ready" packet command
was:
Aug 21 11:18:08 server22 kernel:   "00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "

5. Also, my IDE hard drive keeps giving me this error message:

Aug 22 02:57:50 server22 kernel: hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
Aug 22 02:58:00 server22 kernel: hde: error waiting for DMA

The IDE drive is installed in a mixed system of IDE and SCSI HDs. I also
keep getting this error message anytime I try to run fdisk on the drive:

# fdisk -l /dev/hde

Disk /dev/hde: 40.0 GB, 40020664320 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4865 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/hde doesn't contain a valid partition table

Can anyone please help with any of the above items?

Thank you,

SW
