It should be "Apache" not root
Try to change the group to your apache user (I assume it's apache")

Hi Cyril

Many thanks for getting back to me. The permissions etc. on the file
are as follows:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root           23 Jul 26 11:05 .htaccess

Does this look OK? Apologies - I am VERY new to Linux and am learning
as I go. My expertise usually lies with M$ products.
