redhat 9 hangs

hi all...

i have a problem with a (more or less) new install of redhat 9.
the machine is being used as mail server and webmail delivery.
it has qmail as local smtp, pop and receiving mail, spamassassin using
only spamd, curier-imap server, bind, and an apache for the webmail -
squirrelmail.

what happens is that the machine hangs randomly. usually it's in the early
mornings but there isn't any pattern. there is nothing in the logs that i
can get any clue of where the problem is. messages, maillogs, cron,
xferlog - all of them are normal. i was suspecting spamd but the log
entries for it in maillog are not when the hang starts. nor there is imap
records in the log at that time. hardware maybe? how do i know that?

so i don't know where to begin checking and i'd appreciate any advise or
help i can get.

thanks...
