One suggestion I have - make sure it's a true IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drive. A lot of 486's had proprietary Sony or Mitsumi interfaces. Same number of pins, but didn't work with ATAPI commands.


These were typically connected to sound cards with multiple interfaces.
