Basically I did a fresh install of redhat 9. I then upgraded it with
the latest patches using the up2grade (whatever it is called) wizard
provided by redhat. I then copied my preconfigured /etc/ldap.conf,
/etc/pam.d/system-auth, /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/autofs/auto.master,
and /etc/ssl/certs/eeca.pem files. These files work on gentoo and two
other redhat 9 installations.

Hi,
No I have not tried rpm -V pam, but here is the output:
[root@blochee root]# rpm -V pam
S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/system-auth
so the only thing that is different to your original install is the
system-auth file, which should be.
The only reason i asked was due to the suggestion that your pam_ldap library
was in some way damaged or corrupt.
