perl nightmare

Hello,

What is the *best* method to load perl modules?

I am trying to load the GD module from CPAN with;

perl -MCPAN -e shell
cpan> install GD

..., but I get a fist full of errors (below),

  Can't test without successful make

  make had returned bad status, install seems impossible

The GD errors are numerous. These shown are only the last few lines. 

Using "perl, v5.8.0 built for i386-linux-thread-multi".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
