It's /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg that needs to be modified and it's this configuration file that needs to be updated with the mrtg_total specific entries. I've included my first interface in mrtg.cfg below. Note that I specified the directory that the graphs went into so they end up in /var/www/mrtg/graphs/mrtg_total

This makes a lot of sense now...will try it right away and keep you posted, BTW some body suggested Bandwidthd, so I spent the whole adternoon on it and just got it working, seems OK..but has some flawas in it.
