I am trying to change the display resolution to 1024x768 on my Toshiba Protege laptop.
Doesn't seem to be working.
After changing the setting, it asks me to restart the Xserver. I tried both Ctrl-Alt-Bcksp and /sbin/service xfs restart,
Does not work.
Please help.

Ctrl-Alt-Bcksp shuts it down, it does not restart it.
Telling service xfs to restart will also not work, AFAIK, xfs is the X Font Server, not the XServer itself.
What runlevel do you run in?
And what do you mean? 'Does not work' is not a description of the problem. What do you observe happening?
