I am able to get to single mode but when I type passwd to reset root
password I got error shown below.

passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

I try top copy and edit shadow file but it does not let me as it says
the file is read only. Any idea?

Thanks,
David

Don't know that recovery would be possible, but you can change it.

Boot into single-user by appending "1" to the end of the kernel line
in the grub boot menu. Use "passwd" to change the password.

I forget root password. How do I recover it? I run redhat v9 and I
have the system configured to have dual-boot. How do I get it to single
mode to recover root password?
Thanks,
David
