Is that Z11 one of those brain-dead "win-printers"? They are the printer world's match for the win-modem. By putting all the logic to drive the printer in the PC-side driver, they are able to lower the cost of the printer by a few bucks, and thereby attract the checkbook of the newbie who wants the cheapest printer he can get. Each one needs a special driver that uses the printer port in a bi-directional manner so that the bit-lines, instead of carrying ascii text data or raster data, carry stepper motor phase signals, or ink jet modulation pulse codes. These printers are frequently part of a computer-monitor-printer bundled package deal at your local refrigerator store. This really makes no sense, because even on windoze the computer is just about useless for anything else while it is driving the printer. A printer with this micro-management logic built into itself instead of the PC-side driver software typically costs about $20 US more. People usually only buy this sort of printer once. Their next printer is usually a more normal one. Making these win-printers work under Linux requires a driver that understands the guts of the printer, and manufacturers are usually secretive about this, so you can't GPL such a driver, so they are just not supported under any GPL-ed os. BTW Microsloth must love these printers, because they create a barrier for people moving from windoze to Linux, as people do not want to have to buy a new printer just because they changed os, so they just don't change.
