Hi Abhi,
It sounds like gdm (or whatever xlogin manager) is choking.

a few things you can look at:
-check that your /etc/hosts file has a line like:
     127.0.0.1  localhost.localdomain localhost

-can you run x from runlevel 3?
    try "startx" or "X -query localhost"
 if they fail, what are the error messages?

-look in  /var/log/xdm-errors
 and  /var/log/XFree86.0.log
