Sounds like a DNS problem.  Confirm this by connecting to the mailserver 
via IP address.  Your client workstation is probably resolving 
mail.my-server.com to your outside router edge Internet IP.  Your 
machine is than trying to go outside and back in, causing a routing 
error.  You have to configure your internal DNS server to be the 
authority for the my-server.com domain and add the proper A record for 
the mail server.  Internal hostname lookups should then work.
