rpm is broken

Bored with my perfectly running rh9 machine, I added the newrpms and
atrpms repository to the dag apt repository I had been using and then
ran apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. Eventually apt said it
wanted to upgrade many packages including rpm and lots of others.
However, I get the following error whenever I try to use rpm or apt:

rpmdb: unable to join the environment
error: db4 error(11) from dbenv->open: Resource temporarily unavailable
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Resource temporarily
unavailable (11)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

I'm guessing someone out there will know how to fix this. Help!
