AOL does not have a simple standard PPP dialup connection. You need
special software to connect. There used to be a package for Linux to make
the connection. Search Google for "Linux AOL client".

For any other ISP, if they have a standard PPP dialup, then Linux can
connect using kppp or a similar utility.
