I expect understand you well.

If you don't want use the bash shell for the user root, you edit the /etc/passwd file, look for root and change the shell, for example: /bin/sh

My RedHat 6.2 server now displays: bash# when I login as root instead of : [root@servername root]#
Can anyone tell me how to permantly change out of the bash shell, so that it is not started when I login as root?
Thank you for your time.

I would simply add that making manual changes to /etc/passwd can result in not being able to log in if you make a mistake in defining the shell. A safer way is through `chsh'. See the man page.
