I'm using pppd via wvdial to ppp into a remote system. After I connect and authenticate, the connection drops and I see this in /avr/log/messages...

An ideas how to fix this? Thanks.
My guess is that pppd is starting before the remote system switched to ppp mode.
Try going in with something like minicom and check what is actually happening.
