Hmmm, I did a clean shutdown and reboot but that still didn't resolve the
problem.

I'm going to be checking to see about the log files, particularly the
/var/log/messages file to see what may be going on.   I've nuked the
backups and ultimately, I may just back up everything and reformat the
partition and restore everything.
