Haven't had time to pursue this one at my client, but it is apparently a known problem, and indeed, one person at this office has XP Pro can can't access Samba, while another runs XP Home, and has no problems.
Once I get to fixing this problem perhaps I will post my results here.

Hm, I hadn't heard of any difficulties. Then again, I only have XP Home
