You can use tar to archive the entire system.  Take a look at the CVS 
archives for discussions such as:

http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/info-cvs/2001-09/msg01044.html

There is a CVS list at:
Info-cvs@xxxxxxx
http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-cvs

and the archives are at:
http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/info-cvs
