Gee, did you think that a Google search for "sendmail change banner" was 
too hard?  The answer is returned in the 1st search result for me.

To authenticate the sender, use SMTP AUTH:
http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/auth.html

If the recipient is not a user on your system, the e-mail will bounce,
so your check for this doesn't make sense to me.
