yup. a classical typo, maxwell-street.com is the right one.

I have however now also tried postfix, but the same result there... postfix can not deliver since it can not resolve my hostnames.... strange but true. As stated before, all other commands issued from the prompt will work nicely with name resolution, ping/dig/telnet/....

Is there any separate access-file/restriction controlling name resolution in RH9?  I have just setup a RH7.3 installation, and all is well there, with the same configuration.

Is that a typo or really the name that you're trying to look up?  It 
doesn't have a legal TLD whereas maxwell-street.com does:

# host maxwell-street.com
maxwell-street.com has address 217.215.51.189
