RE: KDE Problem

Hmm, weird that permissions are denied for that file even from root. So
you don't have x running at all right? If you do have x running go into
/etc/inittab as root and change the line that reads
id:5:initdefault:

To

id:3:initdefault:

After you do that...easier to just reboot. Now log in to your terminal
(command line) user shouldn't matter.

Now type startx. If your server dies then vi ~/.xsession-errors and see
if it will let you read it. If it doesn't die then once KDE is up and
running go to RH->System Tools->Terminal type kate ~/.xsession-errors&
You may want to ftp in to your box and get a copy so you can use a text
viewer of your choice from another machine if x didn't come up (since
you said you are new to Linux). VI commands are different for someone
not used to it. If you can't access .xsession-errors when you are
running x then simply logout of KDE or ALT-CTRL-BACKSPACE then from your
command line try to view the file.

Anyways, you should find some where that there is an error occuring or
something which is making things act a little funny. I assume anyways.
Granted I don't assume to know what the exact problem is.

You may also want to cd to /var/log and look for some XFree86*.log files
there. Look at those and see if you can see anything useful.

Hey, I'm really new at the whole linux thing... I'm
not sure what switchdesk gnome is. If its the
Desktop Switching Tool, ya, I tried it, and it doesn't
work. I haven't uninstalled or forced any packages to uninstall either.
It tells me permission is denied for ~/.xsession-errors, even from root.

Thanks,
Jeremy
