As a follow up to my own post, apparently my problem is not solved.
The permissions do work nicely if you call the mount directory of the
usb memory key /mnt/diskonkey, but I still occasionally get "Device is
busy" errors when trying to umount.  It seems to be related to the
"fam" process.  When I killed the "fam" process, then everything
worked fine again and I could umount the usb memory.
