I saw that same issue when I was researching the problems we were
seeing (which is why I tried vers=2).  Interesting thing about it
is that the client is Linux and the server is Irix which is opposite
of the problem described (not to mention that they say it is resolved
in 6.5.13 which we are running on that particular NFS server).

At any rate, it was an upgrade to the Linux machine which remedied the
problem.
