I suspected something like this, but it must mean that Redhat compiles their distribution RPM with such support. Is there any way to verify this. Btw Hal, I seem to recognize your name from discussions about Netscape fonts many moons ago.

Guessing: one is compiled with XFT support and the other is not. XFT support is fairly recent.
