from 'man XFree86": 

XFree86 -version

will tell you the version installed and if you go to the download 
mirrors you can see which version was installed "out of the box".

For example:

ftp://chuck.ucs.indiana.edu/pub/linux/redhat/redhat/linux/9/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/
