Best thing you can do is make sure you have some disk space free (and
minimise use of the dying disk). Then boot on a new disk and copy data off
the old one using something like

mount /dev/hdb1 /olddisk
cp -r /olddisk /newdisk/backup

Then see how much of the data you can get back
