A quick www.google.com search for 'linux backup domain controller' yielded tons of links. Basically, it seems like you can set up a backup domain controller using samba, but can't set up replication between a Windows PDC and a samba BDC. So I'm not sure what if would be gaining anything unless you replaced the PDC with linux too (in a linux/linux configuration you can replicate the smbpasswd file).

I found this URL to be very useful:

http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/htmldocs/Samba-BDC-HOWTO.html

which I got from a good samba PDC overview:

Good luck,

David
