The file search is still on-going... It's now taken twice as long to search for the signature as it took to clone/backup the data.

Yielded no useful data. The data is zero.
I checked the skip number from what you wrote; 4 times.

Yes, it was from the start of the drive - not partition. IE
dd if=/dev/sdb count=2048
