I ran into my problem while preparing to upgrade my server to testing, which 
currently has mdadm 4.1~rc1-4.

If you or anyone else does remember the exact issue, it would be great if that 
could be reported on Debian's BTS (and/or check whether it's actually already 
reported and make sure the severity is set accordingly [1]).
A *lot* of people use Debian Stable and consequently a lot of people/orgs 
would be affected by this (seemingly) catastrophic (?) bug.
