Neil,

that worked nicely, thanks - back to 80% reshape and mountable.

i could not find a newer RPM, but should have tried updating from source.

I suspect you have been hit by this bug:

So you need an mdadm newer than 3.1.2.  You could just grab the source from
  http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/raid/mdadm/

and
  make
  make install

and go from there...
