On a related note, does anyone know of a good Linux Live CD which
enables both network operations (especially telnetd and ftpd) along with

http://www.sysresccd.org is nice, it has mdadm and ssh, no telnet and
ftp, but who needs those nowadays :P
What tool other than telnet do you use to open an interactive socket to an
arbitrary port?
netcat or socat :)
but Leslie and me were talking about daemons in the specific environment
of a live cd, YMMV.
