Is it possible that it has something to do with timeouts?  I have a couple of velociraptors in raid 1, and other then a couple of drive timeouts I haven't had any serious issues.  Perhaps he can try running WDTLER utility on the drive?  (I believe its on the wd tools ISO)

He is not the first person to have serious problems with the
velociraptors, so they are probably not too good to use for raid.
