Panic over.  Apart from the fact I made a fool of myself, I have nothing to worry about!  I simply do a search and replace of all my mails in this thread and replace RAID-0 with RAID-1 :)

 [andrew@k2 ~]$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0]
      488383936 blocks [2/2] [UU]

unused devices: <none>
[andrew@k2 ~]$
