In my opinion, the brief excerpt from the book that you can find on the O'Reilly sit I think -- or maybe it's a seperate article -- is a great intro to mdadm. It's all you need to get started. Couldn't be easier. My suggestion is to make some practice partions and fool around with the commands for a few hours.
