Hello List: This plea for help relates to a SCSI software RAID that failed over the Veteran's Day weekend. Details of what I believe are the relevant facts surrounding the failure are listed below. I believe that the failure was caused by an overheating condition. Sunday and Monday of this week were unseasonably warm for Coastal North Carolina this time of year. The office space in which this system lives has poor environmental controls and ventilation. I usually login from my home office over the weekends to catch up on various projects. I had begun to build a new kernel on this machine on 10 Nov, but had only gotten as far as "make dep" before I had to stop (there had been no errors on the terminal). By the time I got back to it the next day (11th) it was not responding at all. When I went in to the office to check on it, it was very hot in the computer room (estimate btwn 85-90 degrees). I shut down power to the computer and RAID overnight and restarted again this morning. Temperature in the enclosed, louvered, 19-inch rack today was 85 degrees with fans blowing directly on the equipment. Same errors were reporting in the logs so I disabled raid auto startup to allow the system to boot. I think there are a few possible causes. As you can see from the sample log entries below, all drives are reporting parity errors. I doubt that there was a catastrophic failure of all 9 drives at the same time. (1) It is possible that we are looking at a SCSI controller error. This is an integrated controller, though, and I would expect that, if heat related, there would be other subsystems on the Sparc motherboard failing too. (2) It is possible that the ambient temperature is still too high for this machine to function properly and I should shut it down until it drops below 70 degrees. (3) However unlikely, it is possible that the preparations for the kernel build somehow affected the SCSI kernel module causing it to malfunction, making it appear that there is a multiple disk failure. (4) On Friday, November 8, I disconnected this computer from the RAID, took it from the rack, opened the case and added a 3Com NIC while attempting to improve poor network performance of the integrated SunHME interface. Following the installation, the machine was reinstalled and tested without any SCSI errors noted so I don't think this is a likely cause. I only mention it because the timeframe is close to the RAID failure. I would deeply appreciate any help that will lead to reconstruction of the RAID and returning the system to service, preferably without loss of data. If you need more information please let me know. I never saw these errors when I logged in from my home office on Sunday evening [Nov 10 18:06:34] (disadvantage of not having a console screen). Some curious "Correctable ECC Error" messages appeared at [Nov 11 02:16:00], followed immediately by "TRAPLOG" errors. SCSI parity errors begin precisely at [Nov 12 10:30:00] again. This time there are many more of them and the messages seem much more ominous. I have clipped out the span of time before the SCSI errors started, the period of time after the first occurrence and before the fatal last occurrence, and subsequent duplicate reboot messages. -------------------------------------------------- Nov 10 13:01:00 winggear CROND[10853]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) Nov 10 14:01:00 winggear CROND[10864]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) Nov 10 14:02:57 winggear kernel: sym53c875-0: SCSI parity error detected: SCR1=3 DBC=11000c00 SBCL=ae Nov 10 14:02:57 winggear kernel: sym53c875-0-<5,*>: FAST-10 WIDE SCSI 20.0 MB/s(100.0 ns, offset 16) Nov 10 14:02:57 winggear kernel: sym53c875-0: SCSI parity error detected: SCR1=3 DBC=11000c00 SBCL=ae Nov 10 14:02:57 winggear kernel: scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for second half of retries.
