Yes, thankyou for the extra detail.  I hadn't even thought of looking
through the autodetect stuff.
However it hasn't helped:-(
I still cannot find anything that would cause 
  cat /proc/mdstat
to hang.  It must be that one of the semaphores is down when it should
be up, but I cannot find any path that would leave a semaphore down.

I have even tried to duplicate your results.  The only difference that
I can tell between my setup and yours is that I am using SCSI instead
of IDE and that shouldn't matter.
I don't have the root filesystem on any of these md devices either (I
don't know if you do) but again, that shouldn't matter.

Is there anything else at all unusual about your setup?
A you using an initramdisk or loading anything as modules or have any
other patches or anything like that?
